Malaysia’s exchange-traded fund (ETF) industry assets fell 10.76% in the first half of 2021 on the back of declines in stock and bond funds. Total ETF assets as of June 30 was 1.99 billion ringgit (US$469.58 million), down from 2.23 billion ringgit at the end of 2020, according to data published on the website of Securities Commission Malaysia. The regulator typically posts the data without providing analysis. ETF assets were dragged down partly by a decline in funds with exposure to Malaysian bonds and stocks, according to a fund manager at a Malaysian asset management company.

Malaysia’s Kenanga Investors is in an advanced stage of negotiations to acquire i-VCAP Management, a state-backed asset and exchange-traded fund manager, according to people familiar with the matter.“The deal, if sealed, would position Kenanga Investors as the second largest ETF provider in Malaysia, and it would also allow i-VCAP’s ultimate shareholders to exit the business as announced over a year ago,” one of these people tells Asia Asset Management.

The introduction of leveraged and inverse exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in Malaysia late last year has provided investors with more options to protect their portfolios, says Deepak Khurana, performance director of fund ratings and distribution for Asia-Pacific at Refinitiv. These tools are especially useful during a downturn. “Exotic products such as inverse ETFs use derivatives and allow investors to cover their downsides if they have a strong negative view of the market,” he says. Currently, there are three inverse ETFs listed on the local bourse. Inverse ETFs perform inversely to the indices they track, making them a popular tool among investors when the market crashes. These ETFs are also used as a hedge in a bear market, especially by investors with long positions.

Malaysia has temporarily banned short-selling, the latest Asian country to take the action in a bid to stem volatility in their markets as global stocks are battered by the coronavirus pandemic. The suspension, which starts immediately and lasts until April 30, covers intraday and restricted short-selling. While the turn of the century started off with fewer than US$100bil in ETF assets, this had swelled to US$6.3 trillion as of end-2019. Investors piled in US$570bil into ETF assets in 2019 alone.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 13): Bursa Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift said today the introduction of leveraged and inverse (L&I) exchange-traded funds (ETF) will further invigorate the local bourse by offering investors a wider range of innovative products catering to varying risk appetites. Swift said this today in a joint statement issued to reporters covering the listing of the Kenanga KLCI Daily 2X Leveraged ETF (KLCI2XL) and Kenanga KLCI Daily (-1X) Inverse ETF (KLCI1XI) on Bursa's Main Market today by Kenanga Investors Bhd, the asset management arm of Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd. "We will continue to work closely with Kenanga Investors and other industry partners to drive the sustained development and increase competitiveness of the Malaysian ETF market through education and creation of attractive and diverse investment opportunities that meet the evolving needs of retail and institutional investors," Swift said. Kenanga Investment claims that the KLCI2XL and KLCI1XI are the first L&I ETFs to be benchmarked against the FBM KLCI.

Malaysian asset managers are preparing to widen out the country’s ETF offering following a greenlight from the country’s financial regulator. The Securities Commission (SC) Malaysia issued new guidelines in November 2018, which allows a diverse range of ETFs in the market, including leveraged and inverse (L&I), synthetic, commodity, and smart beta ETFs.The initiative comes two years after a task force of the SC recommended measures to facilitate local ETF market with the introduction of innovative products.
